Meeting with your Website Designer: How to Prepare
Est. reading time 1 minute
So, you've hired a website designer - yeah! Are you wondering what a meeting with your website designer will be like? We will ask you a lot of questions about your business and your vision for your new website. Be ready by preparing ahead of time. This will save you time and money (and score you big points with your designer)!
Know Your Business
Website designers want to know all about you and your business! The more we know about your business, the better your website will be. Radar Hill has a Client Planning Document that should be filled out before your meeting with the designer. Your project manager can walk you through the questions if needed.
- Who is your ideal client?
- Who is your target audience?
- What makes you different from your competitors?
- Why do people use your products or services?
- Describe your company's culture.
Know the Focus of your Website
Every website should have a purpose and a focus - what's yours?
- Are you selling a product or service?
- Is there a particular product or service you'd like the focus on?
- What is the first thing you'd like website visitors to notice and say about your website?
Pretend you are a visitor to your new website (or even better - just ask your current clientele!):
- What information will they be looking for?
- Is it clear what your business is and where you are located?
Browse the Web
Grab your favourite beverage and spend an evening browsing the web! Take a look at your competitors' websites, industry websites and even just random websites. You do not need to know exactly how your website will look, you just need to know your preferences.
Ask yourself the following questions:
- What websites are you drawn to? Why?
- What websites are a turn-off? Why?
- What do your competitor's websites do well? What could you do better?
What to Bring with You
Being prepared will cut down on your website costs! When you meet with your designer, be sure to bring the following (or send before the meeting):
- Existing logos: high resolution files (web designers like AI & EPS files!)
- Existing marketing: brochures, signs, ads, business cards (high resolution files!)
- Photography for your website
- Website designers always recommend professional photography for your website. It's true that a picture can say 1000 words; it's well worth the investment.
- Your website designer can recommend a photographer for you and what kind of photos would be best for your website.
- Content for your website
- Links to any social media accounts
